⚔️ Encounter test
Before the attempt, compare weapon choices, armour durability and food and healing.
Do not reduce a boss attempt to a damage number. Record the encounter’s region, damage style, telegraph, retreat space, repair point and recovery route. Enter only after a low-risk test proves that the chosen weapon or spell can attack without emptying stamina; if the attempt fails, change one variable—position, armour class, weapon range or food reserve—before farming a completely new build.
Scout the arena without spending rare resources, identify where you can break line of sight, and test the enemy’s first attack cycle from a safe distance. Match your weapon to a known weakness when available, then change one variable after a failed attempt. The fight is complete only after you receive the encounter reward or journal update.
Prepare around weakness, power and recovery
Enemies can be weak or resistant to melee, ranged and magic damage, while armour classes add different bonuses and durability costs. Build your encounter plan around the target’s current weakness, the region power expectation and a repair or retreat route.
Do one low-risk test before the boss attempt: confirm the weapon effect, observe the stamina cost and check how much healing the exchange consumes. Carry a fallback damage type when the target’s resistance is uncertain. After a failed run, change one variable at a time and identify whether damage, positioning, durability or supplies caused the failure.
Turn the first attempt into a test, not a commitment
Before a boss run, write the encounter hypothesis: target weakness, preferred damage type, region power, stamina plan, healing reserve and retreat point. Use a low-risk enemy or the edge of the arena to test the weapon and observe whether the expected damage or stagger occurs. Check armour durability and repair access before entering; a correct weapon with a broken defensive slot is not a ready build.
During the attempt, separate the phases. First learn the telegraph and range, then spend stamina on movement, and commit damage only while the escape route remains open. After a death, change one variable—weapon, armour class, food, rune supply or position—so the next attempt reveals what helps. If a mechanic behaves differently from an older guide, check the current patch. The fight is complete when you defeat the target, receive the expected progression or reward, and know your next objective.
Prepare for the encounter you are actually fighting
Before entering a dangerous area, check the region power and equipped gear level, open the journal world entry for the enemy’s weakness/resistance, and carry one recovery route: food, water, a retreat path and enough stamina for one escape. Test the damage type on a low-risk target before spending rare ammunition, runes or potions.
🐉 General Velgar: the concrete first-boss checklist
Velgar is a power-level 4 boss in Ghornfell. The local strategy record describes him as immune to Poison and Burning, with poison breath and aerial poison barrages; do not make a poison weapon or fire-burn build your only answer. Wear power-level 4 gear for the first encounter, carry a poison-recovery option, and leave a lodestone or retreat marker outside the arena.
| Attack or failure point | What to watch for | Player response |
|---|---|---|
| Claw, bite and head swing | You are inside melee range | Step out, preserve stamina and re-enter after the attack window |
| Ground spikes | Earthen spikes travel toward the player | Move off the line instead of blocking the entire attack with stamina |
| Poison breath | A cone and poisonous ground area form in front of Velgar | Move sideways or behind the safe line; keep antipoison/Fungal Fortitude available |
| Aerial barrage | At roughly each 25% health threshold, red-orange impact circles appear | Leave overlapping circles immediately; do not continue a damage rotation through the warning |
The fight is complete when Velgar is defeated and the next journal/region state advances. If the encounter fails, change one variable at a time—gear level, poison recovery, weapon range or retreat route—so the next attempt explains the failure instead of consuming another full inventory.
Attempt the full fight after you can identify the attack telegraph, land one safe damage cycle, retreat without becoming encumbered and recover after a mistake. If it feels impossible, check gear against the region, resistances, healing supplies and the retreat path before changing class or assuming an undocumented mechanic.
Commit to the boss attempt when
You are ready when your plan accounts for weakness, damage type, region power, armour durability, stamina, healing and retreat. After a failed attempt, change one condition and observe the result instead of switching the whole build at once.
