How Do You Unlock and Use Mounts?
Player riding a Terrorbird in Dragonwilds
The Terrorbird is the cargo-oriented early mount: test mounting, dismounting and the foot route before taking it into a hostile area.

Movement check

Plan the route with the map regions guide, inventory guide and game modes guide.

The unlocks are not interchangeable: the terrorbird is the first mount and is awarded by The Wild Hunt; it provides +200 carry weight and is tied to Fractured Plains progression. The magic carpet is the second mount and comes from the relevant portion of Icthlarin’s Little Helper in the Umbral Sands line. Choose the quest route that matches the bottleneck instead of farming a generic movement material.

Record the unlock objective, prepare the required materials or quest state, and test the mount near a safe base. Compare travel time on the intended route, then check what happens when entering combat or a narrow interior. The route is complete when the mount can be summoned, used and recovered without losing the player’s normal return path.

Pick the mount for the route, not only for speed

Terrorbirds and magic carpets solve different travel problems: terrorbirds add carry weight, while magic carpets are especially useful in Umbral Sands and feel lighter to move. A mount can disappear after you are attacked, damaged or affected by Wither.

Before a gathering run, decide whether the bottleneck is distance, terrain or cargo. Use the cargo-oriented option for a heavy resource loop and the desert-oriented option for a route where terrain and movement matter more. Keep a short fallback route on foot and do not count the mount as a safe retreat after combat begins.

Choose the unlock by travel bottleneck

Terrorbirds unlock through The Wild Hunt and add carry weight. Magic carpets follow the first section of Icthlarin’s Little Helper and are particularly useful in Umbral Sands. Check the relevant quest prerequisite before planning a route around a mount you have not unlocked.

Before the trip, decide whether you need cargo capacity, desert traversal, a fast return or safe exploration. Mounts reduce travel time, but they do not replace a map marker, shelter or combat plan. Because a mount can disappear after damage or Wither, keep a foot route for the final approach and carry enough supplies to reach the next safe point.

A verified early mount example

The Terrorbird in the Fractured Plains is power level 3, with a Stab weakness and Air resistance. Its alert cry can draw nearby enemies, so a ranged approach reduces the risk of being surrounded. Reach the region safely, test the mount in an open area and avoid starting the first trial beside a hostile camp.

Before travelling for any mount, check the current unlock item or quest, leave inventory space, mark a return point and test mounting, dismounting and stamina on flat ground. If the mount is available but cannot be summoned, separate an unlock failure from a region, item, cooldown or input failure before repeating the entire route.

Choose the mount for the route you actually run

Choose a mount according to the actual bottleneck: cargo, terrain, desert movement or speed. Include the unlock prerequisite and keep a foot route and recovery point because a mount can disappear after taking damage or Wither.
